Title: Disable post counts gained from Off-Topic
Post by: Shark_The_Helicopter on April 04, 2018, 02:22:27 pm
Read Title for Info, compare with Forum behaviour for even more Info.

Although I admit forum spam is fun. But yeh, with all these stars and tags (of which I am myself guilty too) it becomes a annoyance, rather divert that energy into Suggestions instead of which many die off after a week.

Hey, I don't mind getting 500 of my posts removed, if people just creating accounts to gain dem tags and stars without participating properly and just spamming >.>

Idk why do stars exist, I have never understood their reason.
I also don't care about my posts getting removed cuz it gives no harm

Actually wanted to suggest something similar but forgot.
In old ptp it was clearly mentioned in Off topic description "Posts in this board don't count". Bring that back.

I totally agree with Khan, and i think the same way. Post count shouldn't be visible, you can keep your post count to yourself.

Just because there are "some" people posting useless stuff doesn't mean we just completely remove if lol, what kind of logic is that? Most people just whore or whatever in off topic and not counting the posts in off topic would be in right direction (The way it actually was in PTP).

Removing post counts mean you're giving away the information about how much a mrmer has contributed or is active in part of server disscussions. It's not the greatest info but however it helps for me. Obviously I'm not gonna sit their and count your posts to know that.

Also I don't think Jonne's changing the way SMF works for a stupid count, he would have to update it internally which also restricts him from updating the smf forums on future without changing.

Forum ranks aren't irrelevant imho, but like Satvik said maybe post count should be kind of like a hidden attribute (only mods and admins could see them or something like that)

Main problems aren't the post counts, it's these things called "Newbie,Jr,Sr,Hero Member w/ stars" that make newbies postwhore cause they don't have it and they post whore in Off Topic, where there is literally minimal limits and takes easier efforts.

Imo these stars and Rankings can still hold their significance if a member has gained the posts from participating in Suggestions topic and can be considered as an experienced member, hence the according rank.

By disabling post count from Off Topic, it would make them go divert their energy to Suggestions board instead, many of which (suggestions) just go dead due to new suggestions or just lack of participation.

Disabling post count altogether would solve nothing lol.

Imo these stars are a good thing to encourage newbies to participate in forum boards and also take Off Topic board not solely due to post counts (90% of those post increasing games have shit tier responses with minimal humor, while the other 10% is actually worth interesting), while also keeping those who fairly obtained that rank remain in the forum with a experienced user tag.

Btw, when did AlexCJ Postwhore? lol

(kkk now Imma take a leave from Forum too, just want to clarify before I leave owo)

Who the hell cares about some stupid badge?

Just remove the ability to gain post-count from off-topic, problem solved.

No need to discuss stupid, ridiculous ideas just so you can keep your badges which don't mean anything anyway.

No, they are not. Stars don't matter.

Quote
while also keeping those who fairly obtained that rank remain in the forum with a experienced user tag.
The people who "fairly obtained that rank" don't care about these stars.

How about we create a new rank: "Postwhore" > this removes the ability to access the entire forum except for ban appeals and reports! /s.

Honestly I do. Not that I don't want others to have a better (?) badge or a higher post count than me. I would give everyone any badge, stars or any amount of post count they want without a question if I could. But I'm just sick of seeing new non-sense topics everyday or topics from months before in 'Suggestions' section getting digged up. Hell, I even saw some guys wishing happy birthday to the same guy 2-3 times in a topic. It's really annoying to witness how hard some guys try to get their post counts up, as if they will receive anything in return.

Personally, I think too much importance and value is given to the number of forum posts and forum ranks when there are no tangible benefits to be achieved out of having them. A person's post count doesn't automatically make their arguments more/less valid or their posts more/less worth reading, nor does it boost the image other forum users have of them.

Removing the posts which were made in the Off Topic would only add to the illusion of the perceived significance of these features. It could cause the spammy topics and posts to transfer over to General Discussions and Suggestions, which wouldn't raise the quality of forum discussions but only increase the involvement of administrators in moderating these topics/posts. I see the current situation as the "lesser evil".

Honestly,  It's self explanatory , the registered players have yellow colored stars which increase the more they post : Newbie (1 star) , Jr member (2 stars) , Full member (3 stars) , Sr member (4 stars) and Hero member for 5 stars. However VIP's have a set 2 stars which represent their level ( level 2) ; they are turquoise stars which don't increase although their status does change  the more they post. For moderators they have a set of 3 stars (green) which also don't increase (because it represent's their level as level 3's). For admin's they have a set 4 stars (light blue) which don't increase , however the status does and the same for the management.
I don't think it's that hard to understand but there you go.

I honestly didn't give a shit until I read this topic. The only thing I really get from post counts and ranks on the forum is amusement from seeing old players have "junior" ranks because the whole thing is pointless (I'm looking at you, Nikola :) ). I guess I also like being able to see if someone has two posts and is posting in the suggestions section for PR after posting in the ban appeals section.

After reading this topic though, I get why people don't like it. I say, remove post count and post count-based rankings entirely and replace them with a "Member since YYYY" badge.

I don't agree with this suggestion at all. The reason is that because post count has been a part of forum sionce the beginning, we can't simply remove, sounds ridiculous for me, removing something which has been a part of the forum.. I mean comon.. do you think it's nice ? I don't say this because I like the posts count, I really don't care but I don't an old feature of the forum to be gone. We can remove the posts count increasing from the off-topic I don't mind but not completely. -1

Okay, I don't like this "always been this way" argument that's been showing up here recently. How is that a good reason not to change things? It may be true that it's "always been this way", but what was the reason it was that way in the first place? It's like the U.S. moronically sticking to the imperial system of measurement because "it's always been this way" when there weren't many good reasons why the U.S. didn't switch over to the metric system when it was first a possibility.

In this case, it was probably because post counting was a default feature on the forum, and no one thought about it much or decided to change it. Now we're thinking about it, and I haven't really seen any good arguments against removing post counting, but I've seen plenty for removing it. Just because thought wasn't put into certain features in the beginning doesn't mean that thought shouldn't be put into them later. If everyone thought this way, we probably wouldn't have had the means to have this forum to begin with.

"People will start talking shit in other boards just because off topic post count is disabled" is entirely bullshit. There are things such as forum moderation and rules on bthis forum. It was in Old PTP and I didn't see any issues, makes me wonder why it wasn't implemented in this forum.

Removing everything just because "SOME" users are abusing is so stupid. Next time someone sbuses the modify feature a lot so what you'll suggest then, remove it?

Learn how to impose rules on members then just removing it ffs

Bring back the no post count on off topic and everything will solved.

If you've been reading this topic it seems like at worst it won't make a difference, but at best it will. Either way, there doesn't seem to be any reason to have post counting if not to encourage people to post more and show how long someone has been around (a feature which my suggestion would preserve).

Will it change things up ? No.
And your point is?

So I don't think removing this feature is a good idea, it's been here since the beginning, I mean comon..
...again with the "it's always been this way" non-argument.

...who cares about post count in this age ?
I don't. It appears that you don't. Why can't it be removed, if it seems the only people who really do care are the spammers?

I agree with removing it from off topic section, i mean it won’t be counted as there are “spammers” who wish to increase the post count by silly games or what ever it is, but I don’t agree on completing removing it. About your suggestion shows a person how long he/she has been around can be added just below the post counts, i mean it’s fine either ways. Yes, it’s been here from the beginning, why to remove something old when there is another solution for this?

So far, you've made 65 of your 82 posts with meaningless comments like this. One of your comments was posted two below the exact same "+1" comment you made earlier. The irony...

What are you gaining here again?

P.S. You forgot to leave a -1 here (https://planbserver.com/forum/index.php?topic=2801.0).
PPLVers this days :smh:
Problem with "numbers" isn`t something new for this community and humanity.
You see counter - you gain numbers.
And i am surprised nobody use "milestones" for postcounts to immortalize his achievement.
And btw i am sure psychologists have special term for it.

I don't really see a problem with the post counts, and I don't really want to remove them as they're kind of tied into the whole forum experience. Most forums have the post count enabled, it's just a matter of moderating it well.
