Title: Tips and tricks for flying well
Post by: YoMama on April 17, 2017, 08:20:02 am
Overview

Introduction

I've noticed that nowadays, very few players understand how to fly aircraft, which is a sad thing. I fly a bit, so I've decided to create a list of tips and tricks that will hopefully help you improve your flying. I will be updating this as I think of things to add and record them- if anyone has suggestions for improvement, let me know.

I learned the basics of flying by dogfighting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogfight) with Red_Baron, who flew Rustlers in PTP long ago. By closely watching what he did, I learned, adapted his techniques, then improved on them and came up with my own. Since it worked for me, I'm going to try to make this as visual as possible.

I am not a pilot in real life, but I have long had a fascination with flight. I will be using accurate terms for the different parts of the aircraft and flight maneuvers, so if you don't know what things like ailerons and elevators are, for example, you know what to do! (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ailerons+and+elevators)

I use a PS2-style controller to play the game, which is why I suck on the ground. It doesn't give me any special advantage that can't be gained by reconfiguring the keyboard controls. Mostly I use it because I'm used to it. The only reason I mention this is because I may make mistakes when giving keys for certain maneuvers.

I will be focusing mainly on fixed-wing aircraft for now, but I will probably expand to helicopters.

The greatest gift I could get out of doing this would be for you to use these tricks against me. If your /duty allows you to and you feel like trying something I've shown in this guide on me, by all means do.
Just don't be surprised if I fight back!

The Rustler

The Rustler is an amalgam of several WWII fighter planes, though it most closely resembles the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and the North American P-51 Mustang. It has six M4 guns, retractable wheels, and is the fastest propeller-driven airplane in the game.

The Hydra

The Hydra is San Andreas' version of the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II jump jet. It has thrust vectoring, guided and unguided missiles, and flares.

General information:

Example videos:
General usage (http://youtu.be/g62AOdnN0iI?t=120)

The Skimmer

The Skimmer, like the Dodo, is a two-seater mainly based on the Cessna 152 with added pontoons. It is slow and lumbering, but has certain interesting features because of its ability to land on water.

General information:

Example videos:
Oddities of the Skimmer (http://youtu.be/4D7XfkbWCcU)

The Stuntplane

The Stuntplane is based on the Pitt's Special S-1 stunt plane. It is the most maneuverable fixed-wing in the game and has an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio, enabling powerful control over speed and altitude. It is the smallest fixed-wing and travels at the same speed as the Dodo.

General information:

Example videos:
An easy stunt (http://youtu.be/eLbdPv-Tm-U)

Suggested keyboard mapping
This mapping (using the terms defined in the previous section) lets you fly with one hand and operate the camera with the other and operate all necessary controls simultaneously. It's helpful for driving too! If you want to modify the controls further, keep in mind that you need to be able to use both of the yaw controls (for looking behind), both of the throttle controls (for helicopter descents) and one control for the pitch and roll each simultaneously (plus firing controls), worst case.

Left hand, keyboard:
Pitch: W and S
Roll: A and D
Yaw: Z and C (or L-Shift and Space, or any other combination that is comfortable)

Right hand, mouse:
Secondary fire: Left mouse
Throttle decrease/increase: Middle and Right mouse

Terms defined by the default keyboard settings
Accelerate and decelerate/reverse/brake (throttle): W and S
Left and right ailerons (roll): A and D or ← and →
Up and down elevator or pulling up and pulling down (pitch): ↑ and ↓
Left and right rudder (yaw): Q and E
Look back: Q and E pressed at the same time
Primary fire: L-Alt, R-Ctrl, or LMB
Secondary fire: L-Ctrl or R-Shift
Enter/exit: RETURN/ENTER ↵ or F
Landing gear: 2

A very informative guide on flying, I really wanted someone like you to show how its done! Great to see that you've shared it here. I'll practice more of flying using these steps when I'm in-game soon. Thanks YoMama!  ;D

Nice one  :)

  • Generally speaking, don't put the wheels down unless you plan on landing. With the exception of diving on someone, where they can work as an airbrake (they limit your speed), they serve little purpose apart from making it more difficult to accelerate out of a dangerous situation. It's a common habit to put them down in the belief that they will help you turn- Red_Baron did this. Don't bother. It makes it obvious that you don't really know what you're doing. If you want to turn faster, use a stall turn or hold the brake key.

Are you sure about this? From my experience, when you put the landing gear down, the plane automatically activates its high-lift devices. Thanks to that you can get more lift at lower speeds and avoid stalling. I find it useful, for example, when I'm flying behind the president's car and it's too slow for my plane to keep flying behind it without stalling.

I'm glad you like it, though it's only the beginning of it. I'm going to expand it as I get more video. I am realizing how stupid of me it was to never record before :)

I'll confirm what I wrote again, but to my knowledge it has no great advantage over holding the decelerate key apart from being occasionally safer when you hit the ground (the wheels will often bounce you into things you're flying under). Either way, I find that it's much harder to ram someone with the wheels down, you can't keep up with NRGs, and you're an easier target. Also, "high lift devices" = flaps.

I've posted more videos and moved the video information to YouTube, since I'm running into the character limit for posts. Is it possible for me to evade the limit somehow, like by making a second post then having an admin move it under my first one?

I might switch to LaTeX and make a PDF if this doesn't work.

I still don't think this actually helps as much- as you can see in the video I added, it's harder to gain altitude when you've got the wheels down, and it seems to make it more likely that you'll stall when you pitch up, which you'll need to do when the car in front catches fire. Yes, it activates the flaps, but it cuts your engine power so much that I think it's worse.

I don't think that can be done yomama. Only way admins can help is to just delete all the replies and then let you make a second post(for reserver) right under your first post.
Btw, i think players are lazy to read pdfs.

Just a quick question YoMama, do you use ctrl or zero in the numpad to fire in the rustler?

I always find ctrl easier for me and more effective while maneuvering

I don't use either, since I have a controller. If I had to use the keyboard, I would set up everything so I could use my left hand to fly and my right to move the mouse. When I occasionally do use the keyboard, I use Ctrl because it's close and easy.

Definetely not underestimating your skills but I assume that It's way easier to fly using a controller, isn't it? Just curious

Oh I've got this joystic:

It's easier to look around with a controller than with the keyboard defaults, which is important. However, the best pilots I've flown against, with few exceptions, don't use controllers and instead use the keyboard configured so that they only need one hand to fly and they can use the other for the mouse. Much of flying through weird shit doesn't need fine control as much as planning to make sure that you're taking the best route, and when I'm dogfighting I usually have the controls maxed out anyway.

It used to suck when autoaim was enabled in SA:MP, because there was a glitch that made it so if you had a controller, someone autoaiming you hit you no matter what. Some people figured this out, and it sucked. That was partially why I started flying Rustlers- I couldn't get locked onto.

But it's not compatible with GTA SA... I can just play Flight Simulator with it.. Did you try some kind of joystic before Yomama?
Yeah, just to see what it was like- it was a Logitech. As I said, a lot of my movements are at the maximum anyway, so I was just whipping it all the way back and forth and it was annoying. The main reason I use a controller was because I played Vice City on a PS2 and it felt weird to move to SA on the keyboard.

What really difficult is to keep your pants clean when you have a diarrhea.
Control air with 10 buttons is not that hard.

When I try to take down a swimmer, I sometimes let down my landing gears. It slows me down so I can shoot for a longer period. After I fly over, I retract them so I gain my speed again and I repeat.

You'll very rarely see me with my wheels down because I've found that it's much easier to stall with them down than it is with them up, which means unintentional swimming if you stall over water. You also run slightly more of a risk of hitting the water with them down. I think lead-aiming is more important, but, to each his own. Welcome back :)

Buena guía agrego unas cosas

Rustler

https://youtu.be/DOv3VzE4CKo

Good guide added some things

Rustler
-When lowering the wheels limit the speed to 80/90 km / h
-The speed limit that arrived was 160 km / h and the normal speed is 100,130 km / h

Hydra / Shamal
-In a few seconds you can reach 140 km / m and more

The measurement of speed I take practice on another server and I do not think it is different from this but I think it is essential to take them into account or detect the approximate speed for oneself

If you want you can try to shoot me down, I only use rustler here a sample, but I need to practice more dogfight, I'm playing in the morning

I guess I should also mention that it's much easier to ram people, especially in tunnels and other weird places, with the wheels up (as long as you aren't planning to land and shoot from the ground, as you demonstrated). Nice rams- I usually don't use Shamals for ramming because they can't speed up as quickly to recover from the fall, but your example is making me want to try it. I liked the use of your Rustler's explosion in the last one :)

Yeah, but it's easier to hit the target if you stay inside the rustler and guide it towards your target.

Hey YoMama, got any tips for kamikaze with Rustler? I'm not so good at it and I sometimes need it.
Ejecting and blowing up your plane the old fashioned-way by ramming hard and dying are usually ineffective for killing people because the explosions are not synced properly. The most effective way that I've found to get the explosion synced is to make sure that your plane's explosions have time to register in your victim's game- I try to stay in the plane long enough for it to get below 250HP and smoke for a bit, then try to kamikaze, so the other person's game knows that the plane is exploding. It's not very effective most of the time, which is why I don't do it much. Panal_Abeja will likely have something to add to this.

Wait what, Y is a key bind to eject?  :o
Yes, but I still use /ej because Y doesn't respond as quickly.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one of the reasons I started using rustler was that a clan was doing killing spree "fixing" near the civilian respawn, at the end with a certain kamikaze I ended everything xD.

The video is explained only https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAbXL1XqOpk

With your wheels down shooting at the car and if it doesn't work, you blow up your plane.

About direct impacts is luck or practice

Edit

Yes, but I still use /ej because Y doesn't respond as quickly.

If I always have trouble ejecting, I will consider using /ej

What happened to Red_Baron and the others?
I remember always wanted to use the rustler but I always killed that was in 2009, plus he didn't want to play a dogfight fairly just always attacked first.
I always had to change gamemodes or play at night. xD

I've added more videos- most of these I didn't make a special effort to create like the previous videos, because it was easier just to capture moments when they happened. As a result, many of them have my music recorded as well- hopefully this doesn't get in the way of learning things from them.

Here are the new videos, by section:
Basic flying videos
Flying backwards II: Taking off (https://youtu.be/zjX0O5ipO3E)
Flying backwards III: Through a tunnel (https://youtu.be/qgRtfJRPcOQ)

I've added some more videos:
The Rustler
Shooting down a Shamal (https://youtu.be/WINm-P_xMpg)
Attacking a motorcycle II: ramming multiple motorcycles and chasing the President (https://youtu.be/qGe9lq9quhg)
Attacking a motorcycle III: Attacking a vehicle in a difficult environment (http://youtu.be/ie-T-umIr2s)
Attacking the President (gameplay) (https://youtu.be/LHEaaxms8TU)

...and a suggested keyboard mapping:

  • I would also like to thank [SAR]Noah, an excellent pilot and opponent whose keyboard configuration I have included in this guide.

2. Attacking a motorcycle III:...

3. Does "Attacking the President" affect /fpslimit during flight or what is the perfect one to play I saw you use the 30 to play normally?
Poor Dilma_Br, she loves flying too, but he can't get to the airport.
4. Regarding the controls, could you show me your keyboard/mouse mapping?

It's a lot easier than it looks- try it! You'd probably be able to do it better than I did it in the video, since I was sloppily doing it as a last resort. Just make sure it doesn't flip upside down and that you don't hit the front or the rudder too hard (since you need the rotation control).

1. Watch out when you touch the rotor- if you do it too slowly, you might get caught in the explosion. Ramming people is pretty easy as long as they don't know you're trying to do it.
2. I've removed the music that was causing the issue. Let me know if you have any further problems.
3. Yes, I usually use 30 FPS. I switch to 20 when I'm in the water because you can swim faster at lower FPS (try swimming at 20 vs 90 and you'll see that you can barely move at 90). I have macros for switching between them, typing /ej (/ej responds faster than hitting the Y key), /ccolor, etc. I think you can drive/fly faster at higher FPSes, but I've never seriously tested it.
4. I use a gamepad (the now-discontinued Logitech Rumblepad 2 (http://www.game-debate.com/gamepad/ga_pic.php?ga_id=27&gamepad=Logitech%20Rumblepad%202%20Wireless)) when I usually play. I have my left hand as you would expect, but with my right, I operate the view stick with my first finger, the throttle controls with my thumb, and the right rudder with my second finger. When I occasionally play with the keyboard and mouse, I prefer this:

Left hand, keyboard:
Pitch: W and S
Roll: A and D
Yaw: L-Shift and Space

Right hand, mouse:
Secondary fire: Left mouse
Throttle decrease/increase: Middle and Right mouse
Primary fire: another button on my mouse

I'm not used to it, but it lets me do everything I can do with my gamepad. I think keyboard and mouse is better for dogfighting, since you have a lot more control over the view than with the gamepad. I tend to lose opponents from my screen with the gamepad view control more than I would with the mouse. You also can't look up/down in a Hydra with the gamepad because those controls operate the thrust vectoring.

I use the antiquated software that came with my gamepad, Logitech Gaming Software 5.10. I can press combinations of buttons to type commands to the chat with it. AutoHotKey is the gold standard for macros, using the keyboard or a gamepad (I have considered switching, but I am pretty happy with my current setup). Lohit's linked macro program basically works the same way as my crappy Logitech program- but you can do even more with AutoHotKey (however, Lohit's is probably better for SA:MP because it's easy and the only macros you'll ever need are in the chat).

Before I used macros, I used to keep /ej in the chat so all I'd have to do was hit t then enter to eject.

Oh I've got this joystic:

But it's not compatible with GTA SA... I can just play Flight Simulator with it.. Did you try some kind of joystic before Yomama?

Xpadder,XBOX360ce ,AutoHotkey...    :)

PD:Espero que te funcione.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I know there are some programs that allow you a common joystick to make you think it's an xbox360 joystick. Also be able to emulate the keyboard and mouse on the joystick (e. g. configure an "x" key on the joystick to emulate the "Control" key and shoot with the joystick)

Xpadder,XBOX360ce ,AutoHotkey...

PS: I hope it works for you. :)

2. Have you ever tried to fly backward AND at the same time unpisde down?
1. If you say so, then what is the fastest?
2. Yes. It's not that difficult- just flatten out upside down when you fall backwards. Instead of retracing your steps from the apex of the curve, mirror them, so the climb/fall looks like this:
Flying backwards and upright would involve retracing the half on the left backwards while falling. Following path mirrored across the line of the apex flips you over. The problem then is keeping it going upside down.

1. I do not have speedometer atm, but in a few days i will get it.
Aside "fastest" vehicles, always keep in mind that there are a lot of bugs for different vehicles, and some of them can give you some "speed bonuses". Like this one.
2. I am just wondering if it is possible in HYDRA to move forward, then do a maneuver, so you will fly AT THE SAME direction, this maneuver will not be "symmetrical" (in your tutorial you are showing "symmetrical" maneuver when you are going UP to perpendicular position) and you do not need to go UP, you just switching from forward flight to hovering and back to forward flight.

You mean like this? Or like this but upside down?
Flipping a Hydra into reverse using thrust vectoring (http://youtu.be/kkmz3oJOMT4)

I tried what I thought you were talking about earlier- the going up, then to upside down. It's harder than I remembered, but mainly just because the controls are totally fucked up. Once you get used to it, I think it wouldn't be too bad.

Ramming a motorcycle III: from the side (https://youtu.be/A5-ZcWnXn3w)
How did you even calculate that :o
If by calculate you mean knowing exactly where they are, in this case I didn't, I just guessed the general area of where they'd be, then tried to hit as much of it as I could. My usual rule of thumb to figure out where they are in their game is to add my ping to their ping and aim about that far ahead of them, assuming they continue in the same direction (so 170 + 250 would be .420 seconds ahead). Once you get the feel for it (and if you have a stable ping) you just adjust based on their ping.

Here's a PSA for everyone, since there seems to be widespread misunderstanding regarding lagcomp, including among many of our most experienced players.

Lagcomp only works for aimed weapons which fire bullets. This means that the following common things require deflection aiming (lag shooting, or whatever you call it) ahead of your target (not a complete list):

And again, here's what lagcomp actually synchronizes (meaning a hit in your game always registers in the target's game):

If you want to test this for yourself, grab a friend and /dbduel or /airduel them. Use their ping to figure out how much farther ahead you should aim, then fight. Alternatively, just keep turning tighter than they are until you start hitting. You should see that you sometimes have to aim so far ahead that you aren't hitting them in your game, but you will definitely be hitting them in their game. Try the same thing when ramming someone on the ground-- aim a little ahead of them go right through that area (I try to keep most of the vehicle ahead of them to maximize the chances of a hit, as in the video). A lot of the time, you won't even hit them in your game, but you certainly will in theirs if you do it right.

You can see me doing a lot of obvious lead aiming/deflection aiming/lag shooting in the Protecting as SWAT (https://youtu.be/8BCw-13OuZo) video and in pretty much every other video I've made.

I don't have any videos against really good pilots at the moment, but these videos will give you the basics.

What controls do you use to fly and look around? I usually use QWE and Left, Up and Right arrows but that leaves me no hands to move the camera

And because of that, I became the master of helikilling people out of nowhere, especially killing people on the roof of a car, having a ride and instantly, swiftly I arrive. JACKBOT!! Helikills over Helikills!
